Background and Objective: Burn injuries are aggressive and sudden in nature and change the normal process of life. They are emergencies that require immediate and special treatment and care. In addition to the individual, their caregivers are also affected. Given the stable and unbreakable relationships between the individual and the family, both face challenges that bring with them the burden of care and physical and psychological problems. This study aimed to determine the effect of family-centered education on the caregiving burden of caregivers of burn victims.
Methods: This semi-experimental, two-group study was conducted in 1403 AH on 80 caregivers of burn victims at Shahid Motahari Hospital in Tehran using continuous sampling method. In order to determine the intervention and control groups and prevent data contamination, the intervention group samples were placed on even days and the control group samples were placed on odd days. The data collection tool included a demographic and caregiver burden form. Sampling began with the control group, and caregivers completed the questionnaires at baseline and one month after discharge. The intervention group also completed the questionnaires after sampling. Then, family-centered training was held for caregivers in 4 sessions. They completed the questionnaires one month after retraining. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 16 statistical software in two sections: descriptive statistics including: frequency distribution tables for qualitative variables and mean and standard deviation for quantitative research variables, and inferential statistics including Fisher's exact test, Kai -square, independent and paired t-test.
Results: There was no significant difference in demographic characteristics between caregivers and patients in the two groups and they were homogeneous. The results of the independent t-test showed that the average score of caregivers' caregiving burden and its domains before the intervention in the two studied groups did not have a statistically significant difference, but after the intervention, this difference was significant in the two groups, so that the average score obtained in the intervention group was significantly lower than the control group (p<0.05). The results of the paired t-test also showed that in the intervention group, caregiving pressure and its dimensions decreased significantly after the intervention compared to before the intervention (p<0.001), but this difference was not significant in the control group
Conclusion: Family and caregivers play a key role in providing care from the acute stage to rehabilitation, and along the way they face many problems that increase the burden of care for them, and meeting their information needs is one of the important challenges of care. According to the study results, caregivers who received family-centered training in addition to standard training showed a reduction in caregiving burden and its dimensions.
