Abstract: (7 Views)
Introduction: Anxiety sensitivity is common in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study compares the effects of written expression and Benson's relaxation technique on anxiety sensitivity in IBS patients.
Method: An experimental study in 2019 involved 108 IBS patients from Firozgar and Hazrat Rasoul Akram hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: written expression, Benson relaxation, or control. Interventions included teaching written expression and Benson's relaxation. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (R-ASI) before and one month after the intervention, analyzed using SPSS statistical software version 16.
Results: Pre-intervention anxiety sensitivity was similar across groups (P=0.055). Post-intervention, significant differences emerged (P=0.004). The written expression group showed a significant reduction in anxiety sensitivity (P<0.001), while the Benson relaxation group did not (P>0.05).
Conclusion: The Written Emotional Expression technique, especially compared to the control group, is significantly effective in reducing the total score of anxiety sensitivity and its components in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. In contrast, the Benson relaxation technique is only effective on some dimensions of anxiety sensitivity in these patients and its effects are limited.
