Background: Patient safety is one of the basic principles of health care and the investigation of patient safety culture is a step towards providing safe conditions for patient care. The aim of this study was to explore the ICU nurses’ experiences of safety culture in healthcare.
Methods: A qualitative study with in-depth semi-structured interviews was carried out using a purposive sampling method to select 18 nurses from three hospitals affiliated with a large medical university. Data were analyzed through conventional content analysis of Lundman and Graneheim.
Results: The results revealed that the concept of patient safety as one of the main components of nursing services is multidimensional and in three levels. Firstly, it is the individual level; ("sufficient knowledge and skills", "observance of professional values" and "work experience"), second, the interpersonal level; ("intra- ward communication" and "extra- ward communication") and finally, the organizational level ("supportive management versus punitive response to error", "equipment safety", "irrational workload" and "employee empowerment") were investigated.
Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that integrating effective safety culture into all parts of the organization must be the priority of management programs. Also, while holding regular training courses for employees of all health care team members, they must encourage non-punitive response to errors and teamwork as well as taking steps in actively clarifying the performance and expectations of the health system about improving patient safety.
