Background and aims: Oral communication skills play an important role in the personal, academic and professional success of persons, and it is the most common method of evaluating educational activity in most scientific centers. The purpose of the study is to investigate the competency of oral presentation in nursing students of Ardabil university of medical sciences.
Materials and Methods: This research was a cross-sectional descriptive study that was conducted in 2023. A number of 274 nursing students were included in the research using the available sampling method. The data collection tool included demographic information and oral presentation evaluation scale. After entering SPSS version 20 software, data analysis was done using independent t-tests and ANOVA.
Results: The total score of oral presentation competence was equal to 58.81±7.75. The average competency in the dimension of accuracy in content is 4.01 ± 0.348, effective communication is 3.72 ± 0.658, and clarity in speech is 4.02 ± 0.673. Competency in oral presentation was higher in Persian speaking students than Azari students. Also, students with a history of more presentation and reading of speech books obtained higher average grades.
Conclusion: Considering the importance of oral presentations for nurses as a useful and necessary skill and its impact on the quality of communication in the work environment, promotion, and leadership and personal development, it is recommended that nursing professors and the educational system have the right opportunity to learn and promote pay more attention to this skill during student life.
