Background and Aims: Improving nursing care quality in critical care units are essential. Self-compassion, as a resource for emotional regulation, may influence care quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-compassion and the quality of nursing care among nurses in selected ICUs of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2023.
Materials & Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 265 nurses selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using Neff’s Self-Compassion Scale and the Quality of Patient Care Scale (QUALPAC) and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation) via SPSS-22.
Results: The mean scores for self-compassion and nursing care quality were 78.01 ± 8.02 and 191.36 ± 12.74, respectively. A significant, positive, moderate correlation was found between total self-compassion and nursing care quality (P<0.05). Among the dimensions, the “physical” dimension had the highest score, while the “psychosocial” dimension scored the lowest. Significant positive correlations were observed between most subscales, though some variations existed.
Conclusion: Self-compassion is positively associated with nursing care quality by enhancing psychological well-being. Given the moderate level of these variables, implementing educational programs to foster self-compassion is recommended to improve clinical care in intensive settings.
