Background & Aims High patient care quality in specialized care units of hospitals is essential. Self-compassion, as an important construct for emotional regulation, may influence care quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-compassion and nursing care quality among nurses of intensive/critical care units (ICUs and CCUs) of selected hospitals in Shiraz, Iran.
Materials & Methods This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 265 nurses working in ICUs and CCUs of teaching hospitals affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2023, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using Neff’s Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Quality of Patient Care Scale (QUALPAC). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation test and ANOVA in SPSS  software, version 22.
Results The mean total scores of SCS and QUALPAC were 78.01±8.02 and 191.36±12.74, respectively. Among the QUALPAC dimensions, the physical dimension had the highest score (3.01±0.25 out of 4), while the psychosocial dimension had the lowest score (2.86±0.21 out of 4). A significant, positive correlation was found between total SCS and nursing care QUALPAC (r=0.447, P<0.001). Significant positive correlations were observed between most SCS and QUALPAC subscales, though some negative correlations existed.
Conclusion Self-compassion is positively associated with patient care quality among ICU and CCU nurses in Shiraz. Given the moderate level of self-compassion and nursing care quality, implementing educational programs to foster self-compassion is recommended to improve patient care in specialized care settings.
