Abstract: (1030 Views)
Background & Aims Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) experience high job stress due to long-term and continuous care of critically ill patients. One of the ways to reduce stress is narrative writing. Due to limited information regarding the use of this method to control nurses’ job stress, this study aimed to determine the effect of narrative writing on the job stress of ICU nurses.
Materials & Methods In this randomized clinical trial, without blinding, 60 nurses working in the ICUs of selected hospitals affiliated with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2021-2022 were included and randomly assigned to two intervention groups (receiving narrative writing for one month, once a week, each for 15-30 minutes) and control (no intervention). Using French et al.’ expanded nursing stress scale (ENSS), the nurses’ job stress was measured before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention in two groups, and the data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 16.
Results There was no significant difference between the two groups in the mean total ENSS score before the intervention (P=0.907), but the difference was significant immediately after (P=0.001) and one month after (P=0.006) the intervention. There was no significant difference in the mean total ENSS in the control group before and immediately after (P=0.731) and before and one month after (P=0.808) the intervention, while in the test group, the difference before and immediately after (P=0.001) and before and one month after (P=0.003) the intervention was statistically significant.
Conclusion Narrative writing can reduce the job stress of ICU nurses, and can be used for reducing the job stress of nurses working in ICUs.
