Background: Nurses working in intensive care units experience high occupational stress due to long-term and continuous care of critically ill patients. One of the ways to reduce people's stress is narrative writing. Due to insufficient information regarding the use of this method to control nurses' stress, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of narrative writing on job stress of nurses in intensive care units.
Methods: In this two-group clinical trial, without blinding, 66 participants in selected hospitals of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 1400 were randomly assigned to two test groups (training and application of narrative writing) and control (no intervention). Using the expanded nursing stress scale by French et al. nurses' job stress was measured before and immediately after the intervention and one month after the intervention in two groups, and the results were analyzed in SPSS software with statistical tests.
Findings: The mean of total nursing stress score in both test and control groups shows no statistical difference between the two groups before the intervention (p=0.883), but shows statistical difference in both test and control groups before and immediately (p=0.001) and one month after the intervention (p=0.006). And also shows no statistical difference in the control group before and immediately (p=0.73) and one month after the intervention (p=0.80). The mean of total nursing stress score in the test group was statistically significantly different before and immediately (p=0.001) and one month after the intervention (p=0.003).
Conclusion: According to the results of this research, one of the ways to reduce the stress of nurses is to use narrative writing Narrative writing has been effective in reducing the stress of the intervention group.
