Background & Aims Hospitalized incarcerated patients are usually protected by handcuffs during their treatment in medical centers to prevent them from escaping or harming others and themselves. Despite the benefits of handcuffing incarcerated patients in the hospital, it can cause physical harm to the patient. This study aimed to report the effectiveness of using hand/leg cuff protectors for incarcerated patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Iran.
Materials & Methods This is a case report. The effectiveness of designed hand/leg cuff protectors for incarcerated patients admitted to Iran Psychiatric Center that was implemented in 2019 was assessed using the statistics related to safety and accreditation in the quality improvement office of the hospital from 2012 to 2022 including the statistics of hospitalized prisoners, the failure mode and effect analyses results of the committee for finding errors in the hospital, the accident forms data, the used consumables following injury by handcuffs during hospitalization.
Results The comparison of data before and after the implementation of the plan for hand/leg cuff protectors use (2019) showed that the risk priority number reduced from 125 to 8; the number of used bandages reduced from 38 to zero; and the incidence of wounds reduced from nine to zero. Also, according to the Prisons Department report, the prisoners were satisfied with the hand/leg cuff protectors.
Conclusion Hand/leg cuff protectors can reduce injury to incarcerated patients admitted to psychiatric centers.
