Background and purpose: Hospitalized incarcerated patients are usually protected by handcuffs during their treatment in medical centers to prevent them from escaping or harming others and harming themselves. Although there is little information about the benefits of handcuffing the defendants in the hospital, there is considerable information about their physical harm to the patient. used to commit suicide, the staff immediately intervened and transferred the patient to a dedicated physical therapy center, considering the importance of the issue and the dignity of service recipients, especially in vulnerable groups, the quality improvement office and the patient safety committee in the psychiatric hospital Iran put this important investigation on the agenda.
Methodology: this research is a short report. The Quality Improvement Office of Iran Psychiatric Center implemented the idea of using handcuff protectors for prisoners in 2018. This protector is placed on the hand or foot and under the metal handcuffs and prevents possible injuries.
The researcher used statistics related to safety and accreditation in the quality improvement office from 2013 to 2014, including the statistics of inmates, the results of the FMEA failure mode and effect analysis committee, the analysis of accident forms, consumables used. Following the damage caused by the handcuffs during hospitalization, he analyzed the data before and after the implementation of the idea of handcuff protection for prisoners in the psychiatric center of Iran.
Results: The results of the internal evaluation showed that the implementation of the plan has led to the reduction of consumable items in the hospital and indicators related to safety and errors in hospitalized prisoners.
Discussion: According to the findings of the research, although the use of handcuff protection seems very simple at first glance, it has had a significant impact on reducing injury statistics in the psychiatric center of Iran.
