Background & Aims The field of autism research has advanced in recent decades. Therapeutic interventions involving books have proven to be effective in addressing the challenges faced by individuals with autism. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate different methods on books, including poetry therapy, book therapy and story therapy to improve the common problems of autism patients.
Materials & Methods A comprehensive systematic review was carried out using reliable databases such as Web of Science (WoS), PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, SID, and Magiran. The search was performed until May 31, 2024, following the PRISMA guidelines and utilizing subject headings from the Medicine (MeSH) database. Additionally, the Google Scholar search engine was utilized. The studies were assessed for quality using the mixed methods tool (MMAT).
Results Finally, 31 eligible studies were included in the present systematic review. The studies involved people with autism spectrum disorder ranging in age from 3 to 30 or their caregivers. The therapeutic approaches in individuals with autism are effective in several areas, including enhancing speech and language abilities, improving social interactions and development, increasing social participation, acquiring specific social skills, promoting positive social behaviors, reducing negative social behaviors, enhancing comprehension and concentration through accurate storytelling, decreasing inappropriate behaviors and mental distress, and increasing verbal participation and long-term engagement in children.
Conclusion Given the convenience and accessibility of these measures, it is helpful to employ these interventions in hospitals, care centers, and educational institutions for individuals with autism. This intervention should be targeted toward teachers, parents, and caregivers, to enhance performance, and skills, and address cognitive, social, behavioral, and verbal challenges.
