Background & Aim: Self-harm and thoughts related to it among teenagers have become a worrying psycho-social problem. This study was conducted with the aim of evaluating suicidal thoughts of adolescents in West Tehran schools.
Materials & Methods: In this descriptive-cross-sectional study, 256 boys and girls from second-year secondary schools in west Tehran were studied by stratified sampling method in 1401. The data collection tool in this study was the personal information form and Beck's suicidal ideation questionnaire, which was completed by self-report method by the studied samples. Then the data was analyzed by SPSS version 16 statistical software using descriptive and inferential statistics (independent t-tests, analysis of variance).
Findings: Based on the findings of the present study; The average age of the studied adolescents was 17.33 ± 0.67 years. The average score of suicidal thoughts of teenagers was 3.19 ± 5.66 out of 5. Among the individual characteristics, suicidal thoughts had a statistically significant relationship only with the grade point average of teenagers (P=0.004).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, it is recommended to design and implement programs to educate and provide psychiatric services to high school teenagers in order to reduce suicidal thoughts by them.
