Abstract:   (221 Views)
Background: Caring for a patient undergoing hemodialysis is typically a stressful experience that involves a heavy burden of care. With the spread of the COVID-19, caregivers of these patients were increasingly worried about the risk of exposure and infection in dialysis centers. This fear adds to the already heavy burden of care for both the patient and the caregiver. Therefore, a study was conducted to investigate the impact of training coping strategies on the care burden experienced by family caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Materials and methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2021 and involved 60 caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis at the Comprehensive Treatment Center for Special Patients in Birjand. Participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention or a control group. The intervention group received coping strategy training over six sessions. All participants completed the Zarit burden Questionnaire before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS 19.
Results: Both the intervention and control groups were found to be homogeneous regarding demographic information, (p>0. 05). Both groups had a moderate to high level of care burden score before the intervention. However, significant differences were observed in the care burden score of the intervention group after the coping strategy training was provided (p<0. 001).
Conclusion: Training of coping strategies reduces the care burden of caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Psychological trainings and especially coping strategies that have a high implementation capability, in order to reduce the care burden of patient caregivers, especially patients undergoing hemodialysis, should be considered by nursing managers.
