Background and Aims: Following a cancer diagnosis and the initiation of treatment, family members often assume responsibility for patient care. During this treatment and caregiving process, they may experience pre-bereavement grief, which can negatively impact their mental well-being and predispose them to negative emotions. Accordingly, the present study aimed to assess the extent of anticipatory grief in caregivers of patients with cancer admitted to adult oncology wards.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-cross-sectional study, 160 caregivers of patients with cancer hospitalized in  adult oncology ward in Yazd Shahid Sadiughi hospital were recruited using convenience sampling. The participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the anticipatorygrief scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS-21 software, employing descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test, analysis of variance).
Results: The results indicated that 83.1% of caregivers were female, 38.8% were the patient's child, and the mean age of caregivers was 39.96±10.54 years. The mean anticipatory  grief score was 44.82±11.52. This score showed a significant difference based on gender (p-value = 0.007) and to be caregiverduration (p = 0.015). However, no significant differences were observed in anticipatory grief scores among caregivers based on age, economic status, education level, or relationship to the patient (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: Given the observed level of anticipatory grief among caregivers of patients with cancer, it is imperative for healthcare teams to design and implement effective interventions aimed at mitigating this type of grief and facilitating better adaptation to the process of caring for patients with cancer.
