Background and Aims: Emergency department nurses are exposed to work errors caused by occupational cognitive deficiencies. Occupational cognitive deficits mean impaired understanding, memory and motor performance. In the meantime, it seems that people's personality traits are not without influence in the occurrence of errors. Based on this, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the relationship between occupational cognitive deficits and personality traits of emergency nurses working in medical training centers of Urmia University of Medical Sciences.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive correlational study was performed on 165 nurses working in the emergency department of educational and medical centers affiliated to Urmia University of Medical Sciences who were selected by census method from February 2020 to May 2021. Data were collected as self-report using the Occupational Difficulty Questionnaire (CFQ) and the NEO Five-Factor Personality Questionnaire (NEO). Descriptive statistics (frequency, frequency percentage, mean and standard deviation) were used to describe and measure the research variables. Multiple regression analyzes were analyzed in SPSS software version 22. Significant level was considered P <0.05.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of occupational cognitive impairment was equal to 1.56 (0.78). In the dimensions of occupational cognitive impairment, the highest average was seen in distraction with an average of 1.66 (0.77) and the lowest average in the dimension of inadvertent mistakes with an average of 1.42 (0.93). Regarding the personality characteristics of nurses working in the emergency room, the findings showed that the highest average was in work conscientiousness with a mean and standard deviation of (6.74) 29.98 and the lowest average in neuroticism with a mean and standard deviation of (6.56) 21. It was 21 It was also found that there is a significant and inverse correlation between occupational cognitive impairment and its dimensions with all personality traits (P<0.001). There was also a statistically significant relationship between nurses' occupational cognitive deficits with the variables of sedative drug use (P=0.001), work shift (P<0.001) and the level of satisfaction with monthly income (P=0.041).
Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the cognitive deficits of emergency nurses are moderate. Accordingly, the work environment of emergency nurses is affected by negative stimuli that affect their work performance and it can be said that there is a gap to achieve desirable and safe services to patients and to achieve it requires planning; there is also a correlation between occupational cognitive impairments and personality traits in emergency nurses. This means that nurses who had a higher work conscience had less cognitive impairment and also nurses who had a neurotic temperament had more cognitive impairment.
