Background & Aims: Health workers, as one of the pillars of the health system during the covid-19 epidemic, had the heavy responsibility of prevention in rural communities, which, considering the importance and potential effects of the epidemic on mental health, can affect the level of anxiety caused by covid-19. This study was conducted to investigate the anxiety caused by covid-19 and its relationship with the burnout of health workers in Bushehr province in 2021.
Materials & Methods: It is a descriptive-correlation cross-sectional study. 308 health workers in the Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, at least one year of work experience and no history of mental illness choosed by convenice sampling. Data collection was done using a questionnaire including three sections: Demographic characters, Corona Anxiety and Occupational Burnout and the validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by five professors. After obtaining permission, the questionnaire was sent to health workers via the link. The reliability of the tools was evaluated by completing the questionnaire for 10 people from the research samples and calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and the reliability coefficient value for the Corona anxiety scale was calculated as 95% and for the burnout questionnaire as 84%. SPSS version 16 software were used for data analysis.
Resuls: The research showed that the majority of the health workers (%69.5) are women and married (%85.7). Their average age was 37.8 and their average work experience was 13.9 years. %63.6 of the unemployed have two or more children and most of them (%71.4) are official employees. In general, the anxiety caused by Covid-19 in most patients (%70.8) was mild and the average anxiety was 12.58 ±10.81. The findings also showed that 31.8% of the patients experienced moderate to severe emotional exhaustion and the depersonalization was at a low level in most of them (%82.1). However, about half of the patients (%49.7) reported low personal success. The results also showed that there is a relationship between anxiety caused by covid-19 and emotional exhaustion (r = 0.667; p < 0.001), depersonalization (p < 0.001; r = 0.472) and personal success (p = 0.001; 188 (r=-0/) has a significant statistical relationship. Also, the average score of anxiety in people who were satisfied with personal protective equipment and had no history of physical illness was lower than others. Emotional exhaustion had a statistically significant relationship with satisfaction with personal protective equipment (p<0.001), taking neuroleptics or sedatives (p=0.027), and physical illness (p<0.001). Depersonalization with consent to personal protective equipment (p=0.04), taking neuroleptics or sedatives (p=0.029), physical illness (p=0.013), and leaving service or unpaid leave (p=0.022) =) had a statistically significant relationship. Personal success had no statistically significant relationship with any of the demographic variables.
Conclusion: Considering the principle of priority of prevention over treatment, the findings of the present study emphasize the need for policymakers to pay more serious attention to the negative effects of the epidemic on the employees of the field of prevention, including health workers. The significant relationship between anxiety caused by covid-19 and job burnout highlights the fact that the epidemic, on the one hand, threatens mental health, accelerates the reduction of emotional capacity and self-efficacy of the sick, and undoubtedly disrupts their performance. Sufficient effort in strengthening psychological support in the individual and family spheres, as well as effective job supports in increasing motivation, considering the principle of organizational justice, should be among the priorities of health policymakers.
