Background and Aims: One of the consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic is its impact on interpersonal relationships. For health workers, including midwives, who have longer and more contact with mothers who may be infected with COVID-19, the fear of infecting their partners is more than other individuals. The effects of this fear can affect various aspects of midwives’ personal lives, including relationships and sexual health. Therefore, the aim of this study was determining the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 on sexual function and satisfaction of midwives working in medical training centers affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 122 midwives working in medical training centers with midwifery staff and delivery department, affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. The sampling method was census and it lasted from May 23 to August 15, 2022. Data collection tools included demographic information questionnaire, personal information related to COVID-19, Fear of COVID-19 questionnaire, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and Sexual Satisfaction Index (SSI). Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24.
Results: According to the results, the mean age of the midwives was 32.21 ± 6.27 years. Most of them had a bachelor's degree, and their marriage duration was equal to 6.83 ± 5.39 years. There was an inverse and significant correlation (at a weak level) between fear of COVID-19 and midwives' sexual satisfaction (P=0.019, r = -0.214,). Also, there was an inverse and significant correlation (at a moderate level) between the fear of COVID-19 and midwives' sexual function (P<0.001, r = -0.450).
Conclusion: It seems that the fear of COVID-19 can be related to the sexual function and satisfaction of midwives. Therefore, in case of similar epidemics in the future, health care workers including midwives need support such as receiving more protective facilities as well as holding stress management and building resilience training workshops and facilities for individual counseling.
