Background & Aims: Healthcare providers, as members of the crisis team, are responsible for providing services to mothers and babies in critical situations. The purpose of this study is to determine their educational needs to plan their education.
Materials and methods: This research was a cross-sectional study that was conducted in 2018. 208 healthcare providers, including nurses, practical nurses, and midwives in 9 armed forces hospitals in Tehran participated in the study by census method. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire with acceptable face validity, content, and structure. On the reliability check, Cronbach's alpha was calculated as 0.94. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytic statistics in SPSS v.16 software.
Results: The average and standard deviation of the educational needs of health service providers were 4.30 ± 0.01 in the field of sexual violence management and 4.28 ± 0.01 in the field of information management. This amount is more than the average of other areas and it was placed at the level of high educational need. In the field of postpartum care in newborns (2.19 ± 0.96) and responsiveness (2.98 ± 0.89), the lowest educational need was declared. In total, the educational needs of health care providers of the armed forces to provide services to mothers and newborns in disasters were assessed as high (3.3 ± 0.43).
Conclusion: The readiness of healthcare providers to provide care in disaster conditions is low and needs more attention. Therefore, it is essential to develop a curriculum and train them.
