Abstract:   (4 Views)
Introduction: Given the importance of the role of family caregivers in completing the treatment and care process, it is necessary to investigate the factors related to the participation of family caregivers of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit. The present study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses' understanding of their role towards family caregivers and factors affecting their active participation in patient care.
Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in hospitals affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences between December 2023 and October 2024. The research samples were 150 nurses working in intensive care units. Data were collected using a demographic information questionnaire, a questionnaire to examine nurses' understanding of their role towards family caregivers, and a questionnaire on factors affecting caregiver participation. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 16 statistical software.
Results: Most of the nurses participating in the study had a mean age of 34.6±7.88 and were female (77.3%). The mean score of nurses' understanding of their role was 40.79 ± 6.87 (moderate perception). Nurses' understanding was statistically significantly related to the level of family caregivers' participation in patient care (P=0.004). Among the demographic characteristics, active participation of family caregivers showed a statistically significant inverse correlation only with the nursing activities score (P=0.028).
Conclusion: According to the research findings, nurses' understanding of their role towards family caregivers was moderate. Therefore, nurses need more motivation and training in assessing and anticipating family needs. Nursing managers and hospital officials should provide the opportunity to interact with the patient's family and train family communication skills, as well as provide the basis for providing family-centered care.
