Introduction
The care of a patient with a chest tube is one of the most important nursing actions, as patients who need a chest tube are usually critically ill and require advanced nursing care. Therefore, it requires sufficient knowledge and skills. If nursing interventions for these patients are not performed correctly, it can lead to various complications. Therefore, assessing nurses' knowledge and practice in caring for patients with chest tubes is of paramount importance and can improve the quality of nursing care for these patients. There is scant comprehensive research on Iranian nurses' knowledge and practice and related factors in this area. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the knowledge and practice of nurses regarding the nursing care of patients with chest tubes and identify the related factors.
Methods
This descriptive- correlational study was conducted on 265 nurses working in the ICU, emergency, and surgery departments of hospitals affiliated with Ardabil University of Medical Sciences (ARUMS), Ardabil, Iran, in 2023. Data were collected using a three-part questionnaire. The first part surveyed demographic characteristics. The second part was the knowledge scale designed by Mohammed et al. The third part was the practice scale designed by Bedier et al. They had acceptable reliability and validity. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 23. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data, and the Pearson correlation test and multiple linear regression analysis were used for data analysis. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results
The majority of participants were under 30 years of age (61.99%), female (70.94%), and married (56.60%), with a bachelor’s degree (81.50%). The results also showed that only 4.52% and 1.5% of nurses had a satisfactory score (above 75%) in the knowledge scale domains of “indications of chest tube” and “problems associated with chest tube”, respectively; the majority did not have a satisfactory score. Overall, their knowledge was at a moderate level. Also, most nurses had satisfactory scores in the practice scale. Data analysis revealed a significant correlation between the knowledge and practice scores of nurses regarding chest tube care (r=0.170, P=0.003). Based on multiple linear regression analysis, only education level had a significant association with nurses’ knowledge (B=3.090, P=0.008) and practice (B=2.299, P=0.010).
Conclusion
The performance of the AUMS nurses in caring for patients with chest tubes is satisfactory, but their knowledge is not satisfactory (moderate). Given that chest tube care is essential for improving respiratory status and preventing complications, it is recommended that nurses undergo continuous training in this field.
