Background & Aims: Psychiatric nurses are responsible for establishing a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, maintaining it, and ensuring optimal clinical restraint surveillance based on the restraint application standards. This study aimed to determine Psychiatric nurses' knowledge, attitude, and performance in using physical restraint in clinical setting.
Materials & Methods: The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in 2022. The research population of this study is all nurses working in different departments of Razi Psychiatric Center in Tabriz, the largest psychiatric center in the northwest of the country. 200 nurses working in psychiatric departments were selected using convenience sampling. The data gathering tools were a demographic questionnaire and nurses' Knowledge, attitude, and performance toward using physical restraint questionnaire. The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS version 16.5 software.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of the scores of nurses' knowledge, attitude, and Performance towards using physical restraint on psychiatric patients was 19.36(1.73) from the range of 0 to 23 and 36.51(4.60) from the range of 12 to 60 and 65.19(3.29) from the range of 15 to 75 respectively. The performance had a statistically significant correlation with work experience in the psychiatry ward and knowledge (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: According to the study results, it is better to implement in-service education programs with the participation of nurses with high work experience to improve nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice as much as possible. Nursing managers can plan to reform the structure of psychiatric wards and increase the motivation of psychiatric nurses to improve their attitude toward the use of physical restraint. It can make the right decision regarding the use of physical restraints.
