Introduction: Nurses play a significant role in maintaining and promoting patient health, and their knowledge and skills in managing complex interventions such as chest tube management, especially in critically ill patients, are crucial to prevent complications and accelerate patient recovery. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the knowledge and skills of nurses regarding the nursing care of patients with chest tubes and related factors.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted with a convenience sample of 265 nurses working in ICU, emergency, and surgical wards of Ardabil University of Medical Sciences hospitals in 2023. Data were collected using a reliable and valid three-part tool to assess demographic characteristics, knowledge, and skills of nurses in chest tube care. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 and descriptive and inferential statistical tests.
Results: Data analysis revealed that the mean knowledge score of nurses regarding chest tube care was moderate (48.28). Only 12 nurses achieved excellent scores. Regarding nursing skills, results showed that most nurses (64%) obtained above-average scores. There was a significant correlation between knowledge and skill variables (r = 0.170, p = .003). Additionally, nurses' knowledge and skills were significantly correlated with their educational level (B = 3.090, P = .008) and (B = 2.299, P = .010).
Conclusion: Due to the low number of individuals with satisfactory knowledge scores in chest tube care, it is necessary to hold continuous training courses in this regard to provide effective and complication-free care for patients.
