Since there is limitation using narcotics one should think of non drag measures to relieve pain.   Objective: To determine the effect of cold therapy on pain after knee surgery.   Design: This was a randomized clinical trial with control group. At the beginning of trial both groups' pain intensity was measured using a visual analogue scale. Pain intensity was measured again after one hour application of ice bag for case group and tap water bag for control group. The difference between the two readings were considered as reduction in pain due to treatment.   Samples: 80 clients 15-45 years of age undergoing knee surgeries were randomly selected and divided into two groups (40 case and 40 control).   Results: Pain intensity was reduced in both groups after one hour treatment, but this reduction was significantly more in cold therapy (case) group (p=0.000)   Conclusion: Cold therapy can be a good choice to use as a non- drug pain relief measure after knee surgeries. Further researches should be carried out for other painful situations and surgeries, other than knee surgeries, in order to find out the effectiveness of cold therapy. It is also recommended to apply cold in other forms than that it was used in this research . LA eng UL http://ijn.iums.ac.ir/article-1-243-en.html M3 ER -
